What were the North and South armies called
The army of the south was called the Confederacy and their soldiers were often individually called Rebels or Rebs. The army of the north was called the Union and their soldiers were individually called Yankees, Yanks and Federals. The highest ranking general in the Confederate army was General Robert E. Lee. He was born on January 19, 1807 in Virginia and died on October 12, 1870 also in Virginia. He was asked to lead the Union army and he was going to but he eventually decided that his loyalties lied with his state, Virginia. At the start of the war the highest ranking officer of the union army was George Mccellan but he was removed by Abraham Lincoln in 1962 and replaced by Ulysses S. Grant. He led the army until the end of the war. He was born on April 27, 1822 in Ohio. and died on July 23 1885 in New York. He went on to become The President of The United States in 1868.
